Heart attack - what you need to know

Each year, coronary heart disease - mainly heart attack - is the underlying cause of death for almost 25,000 Australian men and women.

Over half of all heart attack deaths occur before the person reaches hospital. About one in four of those who have a heart attack will die within an hour of their first-ever symptom. Many of these people would not have known they had heart disease. This is why we need all Australians to recognise the warning signs of heart attack and know what to do immediately to help save lives.
